Sabbath

I absolutely love the concept of Phyllis Tickle’s new project.  She has taken some of the ancient Christian practices and edited a series covering how to out those practices into practice in our lives.  Dan Alexander writes this book and I was throughly impressed.  I love the concept of Sabbath and taking time each week to reconnect with God and just relax.  Too often our lives are busy and hectic and just flat crazy.  We need to refocus our attention on our relationship with God if it really is a priority for us.  Go get this book today.

Also, I’m supposed to let you know I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

The Gospel According to Jesus

Chris Seay is a great author. He’s one of my favorite pastors and always offers great insights. His latest book The Gospel According to Jesus is an incredible read. He argues against false gospels that are too often preached from Amiercan pulpits. I would strongly recommend you go check out not only this book, but all of Chris’ books.
For the book Chris worked with Barna research group to commission a study over what people thought the word “Righteousness” meant. The answers were startling. I’m so glad I was given the opportunity to review this book.
By the way, I’m supposed to say that I was given the book for free, but that didn’t influence whether or not I liked it. My review is my opinion and no one elses.

Outlive Your Life

What would it be like to live intentionally? What would it be like to live with boldness? How amazing would it be if the things we do outlive us? Those are some of the topics Lucado’s latest book tackles. Not necessarily the most unique topics ever, but when you’ve published a million books like Lucado who can blame you? I thought the book was an easy read and like all of Lucado’s books I’d have no problem recommending it to someone new to the faith, however if you’re looking for fresh insights this book will probably feel familiar and like an episode of Sportscenter on the second time through. Check it out from a library or encourage your church to buy a copy for their resources.

Also, I’m supposed to let you know that I was given a free review copy of the book, but that has nothing to do with whether or not I liked it.

The Least Among You (DVD)

I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Christian movies.  This one was just like all the rest – made with the best intentions and the worst equipment/actors.  I would recommend buying this movie if you work at a church and need an “appropriate” movie to show at a lock-in.  Otherwise I wouldn’t bother watching it.  The acting is bad, the technology is bad, and the storyline is decent.  If you love Christian movies check it out, I’m sure that you’ll love it if you set your sights low enough.  For one reason or another, Christians have yet to make a great movie.  This movie is another stepping stone in the process.

The Falling Away

I recently received this book to review and I’ll admit, it wasn’t the best book I’ve ever read.  To be honest, I found the book a little slow and the characters unrealistic.  I was fairly disappointed and expected a better book considering it was published by Thomas Nelson.  The author showed some obvious skill in writing style, just a poor plot and worse characters.  I wouldn’t recommend this book and I’ll probably never re-read the book.

Permission to Speak Freely

Rarely do I read a book as fast as I read this one.  Anne Jackson’s last book kept my interest so much that I neglected everything else till I finished it, Permission to Speak Freely did the same thing.  Much of her story is already familiar, but she includes more to her story as well as new Scriptural insights into her experiences.  Her candid story-telling combined with the genuine confessions of others scattered throughout the book make this book a must read.  The intriguing story and narrative is just half of it.  The poetry and artistic elements throughout the book are enough to catch anyone’s attention and bring a whole new level to the work.  I would highly, highly recommend going out and getting this book today.  Like right now.  It’s that good.
